Animal Abuse

Cruelty to animals, also called animal abuse, animal neglect or animal cruelty, is the infliction of suffering or harm by humans upon animals, either by omission (neglect) or by commission. More narrowly, it can be the causing of harm or suffering for specific achievements, such as killing animals for food or entertainment.
Cruelty to animals is sometimes due to a mental disorder, referred to as zoosadism. Divergent approaches to laws concerning animal cruelty occur in different jurisdictions throughout the world.

In Canada, it is an offense under the Criminal Code to intentionally cause unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal. Poisoning animals is specifically prohibited. It is also an offense to threaten to harm an animal belonging to someone else. Most provinces and territories also have animal protection legislation.

The Purple Ribbon

A purple ribbon is a widely recognized symbol used to raise awareness about various causes, including animal abuse. The purple color is associated with strength, unity, and the fight against cruelty. Specifically, when used in the context of animal abuse, a purple ribbon represents advocacy for stronger protections and humane treatment of animals.
The Orange Ribbon

The orange ribbon is a symbol used to raise awareness and support for animal cruelty prevention, often referred to as the "animal guardian ribbon". It signifies dedication to protecting animals, advocating for animal adoption, spaying/neutering to prevent overpopulation, and ensuring animal welfare throughout their lives.
